How Corvette Racing Technology is Helping Keep First Responders Safe  
 

A revolutionary connection between motorsports and public safety is emerging as technology from Pratt Miller Motorsports, home of the Corvette Racing team, is being adapted to protect first responders. At CES 2025, Oshkosh, an industrial truck leader, demonstrated how racing-based technology can help prevent accidents involving emergency vehicles. This application of Corvette Racing's advanced monitoring systems aims to save lives on the road.

Safety for First Responders

While first responders work to save others, they themselves face great risks. Between 2019 and 2023, 251 first responders tragically lost their lives in vehicle accidents. Oshkosh developed the Collision Avoidance Mitigation System (CAMS) to address this, using technology designed by Pratt Miller Motorsports for Corvette Racing.

Racing Technology for Real-World Protection

The CAMS system uses rear-facing cameras and radar to track vehicles approaching from behind. This technology helps drivers respond quickly when racing by providing crucial data on speed and trajectory. This same system is now being repurposed to protect emergency vehicles at accident scenes.

CAMS: Keeping First Responders Safe

The CAMS system consists of one or two camera and radar units per vehicle, functioning independently from the vehicle's other sensors. Utilizing artificial intelligence, CAMS identifies potential hazards and issues alerts via lights, sounds, and haptic feedback through wearables—especially helpful in loud accident scenes. Set for a 2026 release, the system will be scalable for emergency vehicles like fire trucks, tow trucks, and snowplows.
