Chevrolet Engine Not Working

Why Is My Car Not Starting?

Cars are prone to not starting at different times, even when they're newer models. It can be very challenging to diagnose the problem when your engine fails to start while rushing to work or throughout your busy day. It's important to understand some of the common culprits the next time your engine fails to start.

Bad Starter

The starter is a small electric motor that is connected to the battery in the car and is responsible for starting the engine when you turn the ignition on each time. The engine won't be capable of cranking when inserting the key if the starter encounters problems. It's common also to hear a clicking noise.

No Gas

Many drivers assume there's a serious issue with their vehicle when it fails to start, but it can often be due to a lack of fuel in the car. Your lights may illuminate, but the engine doesn't operate. The gas indicator may be broken, or you may have forgotten to fill the tank up at the right time.

Dead Battery

Dead batteries are extremely common and occur when the battery is old or corrosion is present. Batteries also fail in extreme temperatures. You may notice the lights in your car start to appear dim, or the car takes longer than usual to start. A professional technician can inspect your battery and the other parts under the hood to determine if this is the cause.

Faulty Ignition

If your ignition is faulty and suffers from damage or wear, it won't allow the engine to start. This is likely the problem if the headlights are operating well, but the engine isn't starting when you turn the key in the ignition. A technician can inspect the ignition to determine if it needs to be replaced to ensure the car starts up again.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter needs to be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles and can start to develop clogs when it reaches the end of its lifespan. This prevents the car from burning enough fuel as it operates. A technician will tell you if this is the cause of your engine failing to start.
